Using an iPhone as a Document Camera for Teaching with Zoom, Skype and Teams

If you have been using Zoom, Skype or Teams to teach (or perhaps for demonstrations) then you might be wondering how you can show more like notes, workings, a book or anything else to show your students. Wouldn't it be useful to use your iPhone or other smartphone camera as a second camera or document camera to do this. Well you can and in this video I show you how to do it in Zoom but it works very similarly in Skype, Teams and other software. There are two apps I am using on my iPhone, there are versions for other smartphones like Android and you can search for them. I have both NeuralCam Live and EpocCam, both are free but there are paid for versions that give you extra features if you need it. EpocCam also has an option to use with Wifi so no need for a cable which can give you extra freedom. This is great for anything you are teaching where another camera would be useful. Virtual Background or Green Screen for your Zoom Meetings?

Zoom allows you to choose a virtual background. It can look more professional and if you are working from home it can hide where you are and make you look a lot more professional. But it can also be fun too. Why not have a meeting from a tropical island! Here I show you the options of virtual backgrounds either using Zoom's option or a Green Screen, which has some obvious advantages, using your own photos or videos. You should be aware that it doesn't work on all devices. Zoom support page with compatible devices and operating systems can be found at this link: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/210707503-Virtual-Background I used a green screen and you can purchase one in the link below . Joining a Zoom Meeting, Setting Up a Virtual Background and Looking Better on Camera

In part 1 we looked at setting up a Zoom meeting, https://youtu.be/Vgt1ZHE2PEs, here we look at joining a Zoom meeting, virtual backgrounds, what a green screen is and a tip for looking better on camera. We also look at the limitations of some devices that might not have the same features such as virtual background. It turns out Lisa's iPad mini can't do virtual backgrounds but Gary's iPad Pro does. Lisa needs a newer device, maybe a new iPad mini, iPad or iPad Pro. Setting Up a Green Screen for a Zoom Meeting

Zoom has a feature that allows you to add a virtual background to project a more professional feel when you are Zooming and videoing from home. Having your bookshelves behind you doesn't necessarily achieve this but this feature does not work on all computers and devices. Another option available to you is to create a background with a Green Screen. Here I explain to you what a Green Screen is and the advantage of using it as an alternative, what you will need and how easy it is to set up. Below, also, are some related links including other useful videos and the equipment I used. Setting Up Panelists for Zoom Webinars

This excellent little utility from Canon is excellent for connecting compatible Canon cameras to use as a webcam in software like Zoom, Skype, Wirecast and more for getting a nicer image rather than the one from your webcam. It not only has a better image but you can zoom in and also adjust the exposure as well as having a nice bokeh (blurred background) should you want it. But it also allows the flexibility of having wide angle of close up which is useful if you want to teach. If it is dancing, yoga, pilates or something similar you might want to have it wide angle. If you are teaching or demonstrating cooking, embroidery or a musical instrument then you can zoom in. You can also switch between the Canon camera and your webcam giving you more than one angle. In this video I used the beta version but the links will take you to the full version. Still does the same great job to connect your camera with just a USB cable. Here are the links mentioned in the video: Support page for EOS Webcam Utility Beta, this is where you will find a list of compatible Canon cameras, download and installation instructions: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/eos-webcam-utility/ Forums Windows: https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Software/EOS-Webcam-Utility-Beta-Windows-Software-Share-Your-Feedback/m-p/304026 Mac: https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Software/Now-Available-for-Mac-EOS-Webcam-Utility-Beta-Software-Share/m-p/307778 Tethertools TetherPro USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Micro-B Cable, 15 feet, High-Visibility Orange: https://amzn.to/3201y4P Tether Tools USB 3.0 to USB-C 4, 15 feet, orange (the one used in this video): https://amzn.to/2ZaPBHE Manfrotto Befree live: https://amzn.to/3eZXxRE Canon EOS R: https://amzn.to/2CiBE1h If you want to see more then check out my website http://www.jargonfreehelp.com

Use Your GoPro HERO8 and HERO9 Black as a Webcam

Did you know you can connect more than one camera to your computer to use with Zoom. That means that during a Zoom meeting or Zoom webinar you can use a better camera, like your mirrorless or camcorder. This is great for teaching or to demonstrate something. It means you can get a better angle, get close up or wide. If you are cooking you can also keep the computer away from any spillages, steam, flour or oil if you are frying. What is also helpful is that you can have more than one camera and switch between them. Very useful if you need to see the presenter and then closeup on something, or just to get a different perspective. More and more camera manufacturers are making it easy to connect their cameras as webcams with out any additional hardware except for a USB cable, here are two videos to show you the Canon EOS R and GoPro Hero8 Black that I use here: Why Use Your Canon Camera as a Webcam: https://youtu.be/-3eIpZn-2rM Using the GoPro Hero8 Black as a Webcam: https://youtu.be/uiAycaws1kA Here are links to some of the items I used in this video: Canon EOS R: https://amzn.to/30IjXlR Canon EOS R + RS 24-105 Mount Adapter Kit - Black: https://amzn.to/2C72zNr GoPro Hero8 Black: https://amzn.to/3lKQwI7 Gorilla Pod: https://amzn.to/3gXir3Z Here are the long cables I used Tethertools TetherPro USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Micro-B Cable, 15 feet, High-Visibility Orange: https://amzn.to/3201y4P Tether Tools USB 3.0 to USB-C 4, 15 feet, orange (the one used in this video): https://amzn.to/2ZaPBHE If you want to see more then check out my website http://www.jargonfreehelp.com

How to Switch Cameras in Zoom

Let's face it the webcam on your iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook or MacBook Air is ok, not terrible, but the one on your iPhone is so much better. So why not consider using that use as your Webcam. I recently discovered this new App: NeuralCam Live, it provides unique Webcam features to help you have the best video calls in any light and context. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/neuralcam-live-smart-webcam/id1524933155. After a simple setup process, NeuralCam Live sends your iPhone camera’s feed towards your computer through an USB cable that connects the two allowing you to pickup the iPhone and show you something other than yourself. With some iPhones you have the option of zooming in and also going for wider angles. NeuralCam Live has a Low Light Mode that helps you obtain a much brighter and clearer video feed if you are holding meetings and events or even meeting your friends and family (can't wait for that to start happening again) in the evening or at night. System Requirements In order to transform your iPhone into a Smart Webcam with NeuralCam Live, you’ll need the following: An iPhone 6s or newer, running iOS 13 or newer A Mac running MacOS 10.12 or newer A USB cable Currently, NeuralCam Live only supports Mac computers, but I am advised that Windows support will be coming soon. Using a Zoom Webinar Practice Session

If you are teaching online whether it be for school, college university or even if you are teaching music, yoga, cooking or something else then connecting a camera other than the webcam can really help. An external camera will allow you to get better angles and close ups when you need them. You can also have multiple cameras showing different angles and if you need to get right up close. Here I'm going to show you how you can connect an external camera like a camcorder, video camera DSLR, mirrorless, GoPro, in fact anything with an HDMI out connector, this includes gaming consoles, computers, laptops and with an HDMI adaptor an iPhone or iPad, I'm sure this is possible with other smartphones and tablets. Having a second camera also means you could have that on a book and with multiple cameras this is bound to help with science experiments, cookery, art and many other classes. I feel this is invaluable if you are having to teach remotely.
