When it snows it is a great opportunity to get some good photographs but there is an adjustment to your exposure that will help. If you've ever taken a photo and thought it might be a bit too dark or bright you may want to consider overexposing or underexposing when you take the photo. Adjusting the exposure is measured in stops and I explain what a stop is in this video too. The aperture on your camera not only controls how much light comes through the lens but also controls how much is in focus. This is known as depth of field. You can control the aperture by using the aperture priority (Av) or manual settings on the camera. By controlling the depth of field means you can emphasise particular subjects in your photographs. You've probably noticed that in many photographs the main subject is in focus and background, or sometimes the foreground is out of focus, the amount that it is out of focus does vary depending on the aperture. If a background is very out of focus this is called a shallow depth of field, the soft focus effect is often referred to bokeh. The aperture is measured in f-stops (f-number). Polarizing filters are a very useful addition to any camera kit, it helps cut reflection and glare off water and glass and there are many occasions where this would help. It also helps when you are taking pictures outdoors as it can make the sky appear more blue which can be very appealing. Polarizing filters are a little different to other filters in that you have to rotate them to see where it is working best, that is cutting out the most glare or reflection. Photography can be expensive and one place you can save money is to get a flashgun/speedlite that is basically a copy of the more expensive branded versions, like Canon. Adobe Lightroom is a great bit of software for organising your photos and also making changes to them like exposure ,contrast, vibrance etc and for applying effects. It is also catalogs your photos so that you can easily find them later. You can do a lot in Lightroom without the need to use photoshop, this includes a bit of retouching and red eye reduction. One of the things I do to speed up editing is to rate the photos on the camera before I copy them over to the computer where I then edit them in Lightroom. If you add a rating on the camera it shows up in Lightroom and then you can filter them down. You might have noticed it is faster to review photos on your camera than on your computer so this helps narrow it down. Of course when you see it on the computer it might look different as watching on a bigger screen. But it does help.
