iPhone Filmmaking and Video

I don't know whether it is because Instagram is promoting the use of video or the rise of TikTok but video has become more popular than ever. Especially since the pandemic. Before that most people seemed to be more interested in taking photos than video but that seems to have changed.

Our smartphones are getting better and better at video and the quality is astounding. And there are other features like image stabilisation.

I'm going to share here how to get the best out of your iPhone but these tips also work on other smartphones and there are some apps like Filmic Pro and DoubleTake that I use.

In truth I sometimes capture my footage for my professional work with my iPhone and use that alongside my Canon camera. I have also filmed some videos on this site with the iPhone and doing more with it. The quality is amazing.

DoubleTake by Filmic Pro - Record with two cameras at the same time on your iPhone

DoubleTake is a great app if you are in to filmmaking. You can use two cameras at the same time on your iPhone to record with two different cameras. That means you can film with your front and back camera at the same time, useful for a lot of things including interviews. If you have more than one camera on the back you can use two of these so you get two angles at the same time. Why not record a wide and telephoto version at the same time. This works on the iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. This is useful for teaching, recording concerts, performances and more. With the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max you can now record in ProRes. By the way, I used the Rode Wireless Go II microphone when recording outside. What is useful is that it records on to the microphone so I didn't need to plug it into the iPhone, although I could have it would have unbalanced the gimbal. However, even if plugged into the iPhone or camera it is a useful backup. Link below if you are interested. Using an iPhone as a Document Camera for Teaching with Zoom, Skype and Teams

If you have been using Zoom, Skype or Teams to teach (or perhaps for demonstrations) then you might be wondering how you can show more like notes, workings, a book or anything else to show your students. Wouldn't it be useful to use your iPhone or other smartphone camera as a second camera or document camera to do this. Well you can and in this video I show you how to do it in Zoom but it works very similarly in Skype, Teams and other software. There are two apps I am using on my iPhone, there are versions for other smartphones like Android and you can search for them. I have both NeuralCam Live and EpocCam, both are free but there are paid for versions that give you extra features if you need it. EpocCam also has an option to use with Wifi so no need for a cable which can give you extra freedom. This is great for anything you are teaching where another camera would be useful.
